Brussels (The Holiday – IV)

Grand Place, Brussells

I’ve been slack, it been three weeks since we hit Brussels (or should I say got hit), and I haven’t written anything, so now is as good a time as any, to speak my thoughts on this wonderful city. Brussels is a city that keeps on giving, and giving and giving, which in this case, is in no way a good thing. The building above, and the other buildings within Grand Place in the center of the city are just about the nicest things we saw, and I mean that.

I’ve only been to such a tiny amount of places around Europe, so I can’t really comment (as I’m sure there’s far worse), but for a city that’s the capital of the European Union, and the capital of Belgium, it really doesn’t have a lot going for it. It’s got less going on than Perth, Australia (almost 1,000,000 less people), its transport system is useless (granted, I’ve been blessed with Paris and London’s system) and its rundown, dirty and covered in Graffiti. And this is after a city-wide beautification process in 2000 after being awarded the prize for Cultural Capital of Europe. I’d love to have a whole bunch of photos with fancy buildings and beautiful sights, but to be honest, I really didn’t see any:

I know, every city looks like this right?? But the whole thing? Surely not. I can just tell now I’m going to love Eastern Europe, and the South East of the United States.

Our Hotel

Out of everything that happened in Brussels, the hotel was definitely the high point, apart from the fact it was an hour and a half out of the city by train, which is my own fault for not checking properly where it was located when I booked it. The Chateau Du Lac in Genval was fantastic:

Discoveries…

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

I found out something today! Yes, it occasionally happens, and don’t worry, I do think and discover things occasionally, and no, noone got hurt. Standing on the tube this morning, leaning my full wait against the door. I realised if the train shuddred with my weight on the small slidey doors at the ends of the carriage, I can quite easily open the door while the train is in motion. Little did I figure that by doing so, the trains engines instantly cut off until the door is either closed again or someone gets smacked in the face. Needless to say, going 80-100kmph in a train then feeling myself slide sideways slightly and all the lights in the train go out for a couple of seconds with a big shudder is not exactly fun. Not for everyone else on the train at least.

To make matters worse, I did it twice. Maybe this door was weak, maybe next will with stand the power of Shan. I shall find out, I will fight for the RDOTMAPD’s, that’s right, the Righteous discoverers of train mishaps and possibly deaths. Course, I don’t think anyone was in any danger through my split second of fun, as everyone knows the only danger on the London Tubes are the mystical death doors:

I know, I shouldn’t re use past pictures, but you have to understand the back and front door of each carriage has this message. Why do signs around the place, but especially in this new land of weird and wonderful oppurtunity have to be so blatent? Has the American wave of sueing people for walking down the wrong side of the road with blue shoes on taken over the whole world?? Must we warning stamp everything?? Another good one is the voltage warnings on the train platforms. I’ve seen:

Danger: Ultra High Voltage DO NOT TOUCH

Danger: High Voltage (10kV) , do not pass! (I think it was 10kV’s, some big number anyway)

and, my favourite;

Danger: 600V! Stand Back (with a logo which looks like it was taken from engrish.com instructing people not to litter or a big red cross would slap them on the hand)

My complete ignorance toward the dangers of electricity have not taught me much, but my mere brain has conjoured up the thought that, 600V is indeed rather dangerous as its probably an area of high current due to torque required to start from a stand still at a station. Physicists, Electricians, Engineers even janitors and social workers should step in here and correct me as to what is actually going on here. All I know is, you see loads of signs stating danger (multi hundreds thousand volts here), and then a sign with danger, 600V!! and it doesn’t exactly sound terribly dangerous. It might be just me, but that sounds like the difference between a sign stating Danger: 3M deep water, and then another stating Danger: 0.6M deep water except a well bit more deadly.

It just begs the question, why would someone touch the electrified rails, or the bright sparking transformer at the end of the platform. Let them die, they deserve it.

I made another discovery today too. We had a lockdown at the office today. This involved making sure all the doors which are usually left open, like fire doors and the security doors between us and the lobby, and us and the stair wells were locked all day. This would usually require pass card entry. I forgot my pass card as I went out to lunch and realised my mistake as I walked back into the building. After thinking about it for about 10 seconds, I jumped in the lift, and went straight to the sub level below, without a pass card, only to walk straight around the corner into the (fantastically secure) office. Interesting topic of discussion for about 10 minutes.

I leave you with a final note:

Yes star bucks, I’m as much for July the first as the rest of us (anti smoking ban, pretty much all public places across the country), but you would have to be completely up yourselves or on something whacky to believe in anyway that others smoking has an effect on the quality of your coffee. I’d rather you protected the quality of your coffee by not burning it every morning, giving me latte’s that taste like hot milk, and cappicino’s that are about 3/4 of head (asking for a wet one solves this little issue though, it took me weeks to find that one out).

Maybe I should write some of my own signs and put then in every Starbucks.

Yes Shannon, you are as much of an anarchist as your drunk tired mind thinks you are will writing a conversation with yourself about coffee on the internet at 2am.

Peace

And Aussies whinge about Wankbest™!!

I bought train tickets the other day, for just over £300. (Dont ask, expensive weekend due to some French festival or something). This took my credit card over its limit by £4. So I paid most of the card off completely, waitied the required 3 days for the payment to clear (a WTF in itself), and attempted to use the card, only to be told that there was an over balance of £3.99 left on the card, and it could not be used until that was paid off.

How does this work? I still trying to get an answer from HSBC. I have a card overdrawn by £4, I pay over £350 onto it and apparently theyŕe still worried about the little bit of overdraw. Then to add further insult I had to wait an additional 3 days for the extra payment to clear before the card could be used again. Questioning HSBC about this, once over the phone and twice via netbank support has yeilded three very similar and most unhelpful responses.

¨Mr Carver, the reason youe been unable to use your card is because theres a £3 overdraw on it. It can be used until this is paid@

To which I asked, if Ie already paid over 350 pounds what does an additional 3 matter, all three times they´ve been most unhelpful and haven´t and still havent given me a straight answer. Itś not rocket science people, its a credit card.

In Aus, my credit account was attached to my other accounts in that I could simply transfer money to it when ever required, meaning instant transfers and money on the card straight away. Here its treated like a BPay payment and thereś the holding period for 3-4 business days until the money clears, from my own account to… another account of mine! Hooray for smartness. Also, nothing clears in this country quickly, and you cant tell your available balance easily. I thought I had £400 to spend, only to find out the £350 Id spent 3 weeks before hand was just in the process of being taken out,. Granted three weeks is a little bit of an overstatement, but Hopeless, Fricken Hopeless.

HSBC, I give you a big thumbs down for the time being.

The worlds local bank, shame we f&(k you around uneccesarily with our transfer processes and waiting periods

Peep Show

Monday, June 11th, 2007

“we’re thinking of calling ourselves Various Artists, that’ll really f**k up the people with ipods”

Has everyone seen Peep show? We started watching it a while ago and have finally caught up with the last episode of the latest season. Genius… I highly recommend anyone who hasn’t seen it to buy it on DVD, or tune into channel #BT, you won’t regret it. Like the UK office, its so painful it’ll make you cringe, but I laugh so hard every episode I feel like crying and my sides hurt.

Watch, Watch, Watch!!

Monopoly, in real life!

Friday, June 8th, 2007

I’ve now been to about half the British Monopoly™ Board. It’s been interesting to see just how nice Mayfair and Park Lane are, and just how bad Old Kent Road is, I’d swear I’d just walked into some Miami ghetto, or something!

Anyway, I stepped out of my office the other day and was greeted by a huge range of nice cars like:

  • 2x Austin Martin DB9
  • Porsche Turbo S (them even sexier looking ones, brand new)
  • 10+ BMW’s and Mercedes of all different shapes and sizes;

and this:

Sexy I say, and it goes on.

What’s even crazier is there’s car dealers in the middle of the city with tiny shop fronts:

I’ve got no idea how they fit the cars in there, but I saw S model’s and one of those RS4′s.

Finally, it happened, I’m wired

Swoit,

Our net connection was connected this morning. Nice change, its been a long time coming!

The first thing I did was visited an old friend:

After playing a few games (Counterstrike), I’ve concluded that the pom’s, and the bulgarians it may seem are not terribly good, at least compared to the some of the pimply 10 year old nerds who wiped the floor with me every time I played back home.

Off top Paris on Friday night, first time I’ve been. Loads of fun!
