Ubuntu 7.10 – The Install

Enter... The Dragon

“Gutsy” the Gibbon

People pondered about issues with the release of Ubuntu 7.10Gutsy Gibbon, it’s been going on for months now. Some said they’d gone against the cause of Ubuntu and tried to cram too much, too quickly into this release, and that this move could be a disaster, creating bugs, and instability and put a stamp of disapproval on it’s name.

Some were wrong…

I’m a manual man, manual transmissions (yes, I’ve had mostly Auto’s, this doesn’t matter), manual labour (err), manual sex, manual manual, etc. I’m a manual, get your hands dirty kind of guy when it comes to linux too. I’m well seasoned with the fact that there’s a bunch of stuff that hasn’t worked automatically in the past, and chances are won’t be perfect in the future.

The Fight of Linux

The fight… No more

Upon installing the latest instalment of Ubuntu, I completely expected to have to:

  • Spend an hour installing, configuring and automating wpasupplicant and my wireless drivers, so that the wireless would just work, when and where I needed it.
  • Trawl through countless google pages and config settings to setup dual monitors just perfectly.
  • Stuff around with different video card drivers until I found one which compiz (the flavor of 6 months ago, with effects similar & better than Vista’s Aero or MacOSX’s visuals) would function correctly, then spend more time setting up and getting compiz right.
  • and so on…

That’s the way its been for me for at least the last few years, and I was prepared for the worst. To my surprise, Everything just worked, no more manual configuration on Wireless, its finally up to a level of Windows XP or there abouts where you select the network you’d like to connect to, supply a password and bam, your on, all the time. No problems.

A simple task, but being missing/broken for so long

In fact, since installing it three hours ago, in which the whole process took at most 30 minutes, I’ve been sitting here ever since twiddling my thumbs wondering what I can break just so there is actually something for me to do.

At this rate, I might actually get stuck into some of this work I have to do….

As I said in my previous post, this version is a keeper, when I installed Feisty, nothing really jumped out on me, it was up to date, and had a few more features, but still had the same problems as the last few years where not everything worked, quite as well as it should. This is definitely proof of a move in the right direction, stabilty, integration and ease of use and install are paramount in allowing non-savvy users to be able to use and enjoy it if they so please.

Now, if only I still had access to a Gentoo Box…

Too much time..

Those Spanish?! have far too much time on their hands!

Shit!! I'd hate to have that level of control over me with regards to ineternet stuff at work. It's crazy, Cath doesn't even have net access at all.. I can't imagine how she gets through the day.

When I moved here, I kept hearing those stories about Austrlaians being really hard working and everything (go figure), well at my job everyone is really hard working.

We're the slack ones. .and we make up about 40% of the office now.

If your bored, get on youtube and look up auto mario. Ther's this version of Mario on the DS or something, and its like the hardest level at the end of the game and you can complete it by not touching the controls once.
I don't even like Mario particularly, but this is cool..

    BOredness at work.. Evil :P

Hehehehe, yeah, sometimes these comment bits feel like a private henry and shannon forum. The good thing about it, is that it doesn't come up as facebook on my work login.

We have a 200mb limit on our weekly usage at work, and if you go over it too many times, they send a report of all the things you've been doing to your manager. It's all the more damning with facebook, youtube and myspace all over your history.

This other grad i know got her internet cancelled for three months. She has like the most boring job ever now.

I get ya, and don't worry, there are no raving loons here.. Just me, it seems.
  • Henry
what the hell?? the other post finally turned up! Now I look like a raving loon!

and yeah, DS, not Wii ;)
  • Henry
nah, i just meant like a DS in an aesthetical sense. Like, small, white etc. And there's the whole easy happy way that it works too, which is a little bit like a DS.

Obviously it's not really a gaming thing at all, it just looks a bit like it.

Anyway, the point of it is that it's really light, has long battery life, built in wifi, really durable so you can chuck it in a back and it can take some banging around. And they're supposed to be pretty cheap as well, I think you can expand the storage with SD cards or something as well. OR just plug in a USB drive or something.

    Ah, I see, I see..

I don't get it. Sometimes it picks up comments as spam, other times not, doesn't like URL's being posted in comments or something..

    Heathen!!

That looks like a cool little lappie.. How is it like aWii though?? Does it motion sense?

fucking, i did a post on it all last night, but it doens't seem to have appeared. There was a thing on OCAU about it, it's like a cross between a nintendo DS, a lappy and a pda.

like, micro lappy, less than 1 kg, with built in OS (i think) and 8 gb solid state memory. suporting IM clients, skype etc (has camera and mic) and general web browsing. Could be a good alternative to this heavy old lappy i chunk around the apartment for pretty much browsing, IMing and voice-calling the UK. They were supposed to be like $200-300, but i think they ended up being more expensive.

    and for discussion:

    http://forums.overclockers.com...

    I heart OCAU.

They're pretty much mini laptops, or jumbo pda's. I could imagine using one for mobile laptop use - store/view photo's, some browsing and chatting - pretty much all I use my lappy for now. They have built in skype, cameras, mics etc too.

I'm thinking what i'd like at the moment is a quiet little factor form PC sitting somewhere in the apartment for downloads, more involved word processing and the occasional movie conversion for psp format, and then something like the eee PC's or a really light laptop for general browsing and chatting.

All in a perfect world where I'm not 100% strapped for cash and trying to save all the time of course... :p

    aye!

One day left, for me anyway, then I'm going to sleep in. I feel enourmously crap, stuff this English Pre-winter sick period.

    Megh!!!

I'm taking pain killers, cold and flu, 2 types of vitamins and more painkillers just to leave the house in the mornings.

    How's that for whinging??

    Asus PC's?? Tell me more!
  • Henry at work
PS: did you see those new asus eee PCs?
  • Henry at work
    You nerd :p

Man, it is a sllloooooooowwwwwwwwww day at work today. I've actually spent time "folioing" my claim files, which is like creating an index of each individual piece of paper. Unbelieveably boring. It's not like I don't have other things to do as well, I'm just doing this because i'm really brain dead today, and I need to do something at work or i feel unproductive and shitty.

I ran out of antihistamines yesterday, so my hayfever has been going spastic all day. I'd totally flex off for the afternoon, but there's almost no one else at work at the moment, and i'd pretty much be leaving the place deserted.

A lot of whinge I know, but fark i'm bored.
